#ATLBBQFest And the winner is…….. #JimnNicksBBQ !!!!!!!

photo 3 (2)photo (1)

When I stood in line at the Jim-N-Nick’s BBQ stand at the Atlanta BBQ fest this past weekend, the cynical part of me said: “This long line better be worth the wait!” Once I made my way to the front of the line I resisted the rack of ribs and ordered the Pulled Pork and Grits with Grilled Corn. In this case my second choice prevailed! I am not sure where how what or who made the grits that creamy, how the sauce was so great or how the corn was so flavorful yet simply seasoned! In fact I don’t remember anything else I tried at the fest… :-/

$8.95 House Dish for Two at Tin Drum AsiaCafe Various Locations, Atlanta

photo 5

While attending Georgia State University this past year I frequented Tin Drum Asia Cafe. Typically I would have the egg drop soup (which was too salty for my taste) and a veggie spring roll (which i would recommend).

Yet, my last time there, in fact it was the day I turned in my last paper at GSU. I tried the Mango Stir Fry on top of a bed of fried rice ($8.95). Tin Drum has several House Dishes which are bowls of various chicken stir fry’s over a bed of a choice of white, brown or fried rice.

The mango stir fry consisted of:

Sweet-chili sauce, fresh mango, basil, onions, bell peppers, jalapenos, crispy chicken, steamed white rice

It was pretty good, what I would expect from a asian fast food joint. Nothing to sing hallelujah over but enough for a return visit. But I digress, this bowl is far too much for one person unless you plan on taking some home for later; instead bring a friend or lover and share, this is a great deal for two people at $8.95!

Pulled Pork Arepa and Chicken Empanada at Arepa Mia Edgewood, Atlanta

photo 4 (1)photo 3 (1)

I’ve had Arepa’s in Miami. Pretty much only stuffed with cheese. Venezuelan native Lis Hernandez, native brings Arepa’s to life with Meat filled Arepa’s.

I recommend the Pulled Pork Arepa (Penril, $6.50), It was so good I went back to have another.

Try the Chicken Empanada’s (Pollo La Catira, $5.00), they are made from scratch it will change your view of the pre-frozen empanadas you’ve been bombarded with at Mexican and Latin restaurants.

If you are into fresh made juices Arepa Mia has amazing fresh made juices (Guava and Papaya) and they are amazing!

Wisconsin Cheddar Grilled Cheese Sandwich at One Eared Stag Inman Park, Atlanta

photo 2 (1)

One Eared Stag is the most cranking little restaurant bar in Inman Park; known for Fried Chicken on Monday night which I continue to unintentionally miss. Also, FYI: The fried chicken on Monday is about the only consistent dish on the menu as they change their menu just about every night.

The fries which are served with a spicy mayo made from scratch (not shown) are a must try. Also, if you so happen to be in the area during lunch try the Wisconsin cheddar grilled cheese with beer mustard.

If you are a spicy food connoisseur or up for the challenge, try the Hot Chicken, the flavors were great but far too spicy for me. If you dare have the “Corpse Reviver” if you are into craft cocktails (usually made with bitters and or other unusual ingredients).

Chicken and Waffles at Red Rooster Harlem, New York

photo 3

The Chicken and Waffles at Red Rooster Harlem are great; but what’s even better is the Bourbon Maple Syrup drizzled all over them!!

The atmosphere is amazing and if you can make it to the patio before the weather becomes unbearable you will be right in the mix of the most lively block in Harlem!

To add, I even had a chance to meet Marcus Samuelsson (3 times James Beard Award Winner/Owner of Red Rooster Harlem/Ginny’s Supper Club) who happened to be sitting on the Patio. Later on that evening we me again at his chef station at the James Beard Awards!! He is very humorous and cordial!

Orange Sesame Ginger Lollipop Wings at Buckhead Bottle Bar & Bistro Buckhead, Atlanta

Last night in the midst of having cocktails I decided to take a peek at the Latenight Menu (11pm-close) while at Buckhead Bottle Bar & Bistro. As you may or may not know chicken wings and cocktails after 11pm are the perfect combination.

I was expecting the typical pre-frozen, greasy overcooked wings; but to my surprise, the Orange Sesame Ginger Lollipop Wings were fresh flavorful with a pop of orange zest and ginger.

The lounge/club on the other hand is a mixed crowd that plays mainstream hip-hop music on Friday and Saturday and is standing room only after 11pm. If you prefer laid back lounge environment try them Monday through Thursday evening (between 5-10pm) for their full menu and Hookah service.

Mexican Corn at Chick-A-Biddy Atlantic Station, Atlanta

photo 5-2

The Mexican corn at Chick-A-Biddy is not your typical creamed corn. Sautéed with onions, red peppers and scallions with the perfect combination of seasonings. Pairs well with their Grilled Piri Piri Chicken.

To add, everything on the menu at this restaurant is priced $12.00 and under (with the exception of the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake $16.00) including the 1/4 chicken meal with two sides. I would recommend the Wood Grilled Piri Piri Chicken. The fried chicken on the other hand is nothing to jump up and down over.

The menu mostly consists of chicken, it also has veggie dishes such as a black bean burger, veggie chilli and quinoa and several salads .

The bartender (bald guy can’t remember his name) is a great mixologist. Please try the frozen mint julep or frozen watermelon margarita they’re both equally great.
